History
Since 1934, Black Electric Inc. has been a family-run electrical contractor, providing the most up-to-date, reliable and cost-effective service for our clients.
Our dedication is how we have maintained so many satisfied, repeat customers. We pride ourselves in our superior quality and dependability, whether we are working for a commercial, industrial, municipal or residential customer.
Our design and construction staff works with general contractors, engineers, architects, municipalities, businesses and homeowners.
Bill Black founded the business in 1934 in Fishkill Plains after he returned from his stint in the military. Eventually, his sons Ron and Reid joined the firm and began managing it.
In the early 1960s, Black Electric was incorporated. The latest Black to manage operations is Jim, who began working for the family business at the age of 14 during summer vacations. After his graduation from college with a degree in chemistry, he joined Black Electric full-time. Daphne Black, Jim’s wife, also joined the team 16 years ago, bringing her 30 + years of experience in the construction industry to assist in all facets of its day-to-day operations.
Continuing the family tradition, Jim’s son Collin began working full-time at Black Electric this past summer.
In the 85 years Black Electric has been serving the area, the business has grown in the scope of its work and in its technological offerings.
“In the 1950s and 1960s,” says Jim, “you had light bulbs and toasters. Now you have data and networks and solar power. You grow and adapt to new technology as it becomes available.”
Jim has a framed estimate hanging in his office from Oct. 23, 1946. It shows a quote for wiring an entire house. The cost? A whopping $115.
