Bill Black founded the business in 1934 in Fishkill Plains after he returned from his stint in the military. Eventually, his sons Ron and Reid joined the firm and began managing it.

In the early 1960s, Black Electric was incorporated. The latest Black to manage operations is Jim, who began working for the family business at the age of 14 during summer vacations. After his graduation from college with a degree in chemistry, he joined Black Electric full-time.

Last summer, Jim’s eldest son, Collin, began working with his father, continuing the family tradition.

In the 75 years Black Electric has been serving the area, the business has grown in the scope of its work and in its technological offerings.

“In the 1950s and 1960s,” says Jim, “you had light bulbs and toasters. Now you have data and networks and solar power. You grow and adapt to new technology as it becomes available.”

Jim has a framed estimate hanging in his office from Oct. 23, 1946. It shows a quote for wiring an entire house. The cost? A whopping $115.
